We travelled to The Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point. This is situated at the South Western tip of Africa. The old lighthouse there had been in use from 1860 to 1919 and was able to be seen by ships out at sea 67 kilometres away. However, due to fog and cloud, it was often hidden due to its height above sea level. The Portuguese ship, the ‘SS Lusitania’ which was an ocean liner was wrecked off Cape Point. Due to this, a new lighthouse was built that was a lot nearer to the sea level to prevent such tragedies from happening.
